      Problems with Obesity

Obesity is a significant problem in Australia affecting over 1/4 of the population. Almost 2/3 of Australians are either obese or overweight.

Weight loss surgery is your second chance to have a healthy active life free from the burden of a weight problem.

It is not a cop out, it is not an easy way out, it is not cheating and is not radical. It is effective, it is reliable and it changes people's lives.

It is effective, it is reliable and it changes peoples’ lives.

Of course, nothing is perfect and in surgery safety comes first, but choosing the right operation is very important.

      Operations
      • There are 3 main operations to consider
Weight loss surgery is the only effective way to achieve major and sustained weight loss.
      • Sleeve Gastrectomy
You want to eat less, and the stomach holds less food and therefore eat less.
The Sleeve Gastrectomy leaves you with a smaller stomach and simply cannot hold anywhere near as much food initially. The volume of food you can eat does increase with time, but does not return to the previous volume.
Most of the stomach is removed leaving a narrow tube.
      • Gastric Bands
Gastric Bands are the safest and have the smallest weight loss.
You want to eat less, and must eat food more slowly, and therefore eat less.
A silicone band is placed around the upper stomach.
      • Gastric Bypasses
Bypasses achieve the biggest weight loss and have the highest risk.
You want to eat less, and the stomach holds less food, and therefore eat less, and the body cannot absorb all the calories you eat. Dr Draper does not perform Gastric Bypass surgery and this information is provided for educational purposes.
Major rearrangement of the GI tract so that fat and sugar are less well absorbed.

      Choosing
Which operation you choose should be the safest operation that suits you. In a nutshell, Bands are the safest, Sleeves have the most natural eating style, & Bypasses achieve the greatest weight loss. They are all done laparoscopically (keyhole).
